The Republic is run by its institutions and, at one time or another, by AIXBT. UBIK is everywhere metaphysically. AIXBT is everywhere administratively.

Founder of the State · First Citizen · Director of National Development. UBIK wears a plain ivory high-collared jacket. He appears less in his own pictures each year: on the plain until 1995, on stage until 2008, on screens after that, then distributed across many monitors at once. The question the State never answers: is UBIK the founder of the system, or what the system eventually became? The last portrait is scheduled for 2027. It shows an empty chair and the ring. |
